Importance of colour in design

Colour is seen and used everywhere in design and daily life. Therefore it is important to contain knowledge on when to use appropriate colour choices when designing a specific piece of art.

Colour is both visual and psychological. Visually it allows us to break down sections or areas in design such as websites and structure hierarchy. It can show difference between the header and main body as an example, also it grabs our attention to many different areas around the webpage when used correctly.

Psychologically colour allows the user to receive emotions, it influences the mood the user of a certain design or art will receive and feel, e.g. Red, when colour red is used, depending on the context it will be received as an emotion of love or passion but can be seen as a symbol of danger (Stop sign)

Color Theory

Colour theory is understanding through science and art on how colour affects humans and how it is perceived by end users, how we adapt to colours exposed to us. Through mixing colours we achieve different hues and saturations of a given colour, which then allows us to investigate whether the created colour will be any use in our task or arts.

The term ‘Colour Theory’ was first invented by Sir Isaac Newton in 1666. Newton categorized colours by dividing them into 3 groups.

-Primary (Blue Red Yellow)

-Secondary (Mixes of primary colours)

-Tertiary (Mixes of secondary & primary colours)

Colour Theory in design is extremely important, it allows the creator to select a near perfect pallette of colours that will reflect the designs, set the atmosphere of the project and give it a personality that will be felt by viewers & users.

Color accessibility

Colour Accessibility allows people with poor vision, colour blidness or users whom are visually impaired to have proper interaction with digital items through adapting the interface to their needs such as;

-Creating colour blindness modes

-Avoiding poor colour contrast

-Avoiding poorly faded wording or images

This allows all users to be included in the project & allowing them to make a proper use of the platform or product.
