Printing of type has been an important human invention that has been around us for centuries, although it has been developed and improved with modern technology.

Woodblock Printing

Before humans were able to print on clothes, woodblock printing was discovered in China in 200/220 AD. It is known as the earliest printing form to ever be discovered. The Chinese would carve the design into the block of wood, making the main part of the design to be raised. Once that was successfully executed, the next step was to ink the raised part of the woodblock, and press it against the cloth to print the image.

Johanes Guttenberg & Moveable Type

Born in Mainz, Germany between 1393-1403, was a German craftsman and a professional inventor whom introduced the discovery of letter printing to Europe, including movable type printing, which was rapidly spread throughout the world.

Using metal type pieces allowed Johanes to create a faster and more durable printing technique, as the metal type was more sturdy and solid. Many seen this as a genius invention as movable type printing was more flexible than other methods of printing such as block printing or hand copying.

Moveable type became popular and needed to look professional when in use, this is how it allowed to fonts and typography to be invented and began to be used on a wide scale.
