Why icons?

Icons play an important role in user interface experience. This is due to the fact that with words there exists a language barrier and ideas do not always come across the same through different people’s minds, therefore icons are more reliable, providing visual information in a small simplified non complicated visual variation. Icons help to match the interfaces and enhancing them to look more proffessional

Different styles of an icon

There are many different styles of icons that can be created depending on the specific detail one brand or company wish to set out in their icon. These are the different icons:

Good icon recipe

Level detail

Detail in icons in subjective, although less is more in most of the cases. If an icon is overloaded with information it becomes hard to look at and understand it from distance. Therefore good balance is key to creating a good icon.

Scale

Scale is an important factor to create a good and useful icon, if the icon is too small it will be to hard to read information from it and see from distance, although if it is too large it may not fit onto the right areas where it is needed and there might be problems with re-sizing it. Therefore good balance is scale is needed.

Harmony

Harmony in design is needed and attracts users. The elements inside of the icon e.g. line thickness or rounded corners, all have to add up to create a perfect icon piece and make it useful. Once all elements are matched and created the way it is meant to be, harmony in design is achieved.

Differentiate

To make certain icons stand out from the rest, they need to differentiate atleast in some areas e.g. line thickness or a different perspective of design. This will attract more attention and will give the user something new to look at instead.
