Type specimens are used for hundreds of years. They are used to professionally showcase a certain typeface in a physical or digital format. Usually shown in sets of upper/lowercase, numbers and special characters.
Type specimen includes all font variations making it easy to showcase and determine which font variation can be best used for a specific task when inspecting it in use. Viewers are able to inspect and view the typefaces characteristics.
Type specimen usually come in the format of posters nowadays or product packaging, to be viewed at a large scale.
Futura was created and designed in the year 1927 by a designer named “Paul Renner”. Till this day Futura remains highly used throughout the advertising campaigns and the industry, as well as by many popular companies such as Volkswagen, Ikea (Until 2010) and Fox News channel. Futura is also highly recognisable from the title logo in the popular “American Beauty” film from the year 1999. The designers stated that the target of this font was to create a modern like looking typeface to express modern products better. Futura catches the audiences eye’s as it is created based on geometric shapes, including near perfect circles and triangles. Helvetica, otherwise known as (Neue Haas Grotesk) was developed and created in 1957 by two Swiss designers named Max Miedinger and Edurd Hoffman. The designers stated that there was no true meaning behind the concept of the font, it was only meant to look natural on variety of products as well as designs. Although the initial release of the Helvetica font was meant to match a sans serif font trend from the european graphic designers. Helvetica became extremely popular after years of it’s release and has officialy became the most popular typeface of the mid 20th century.
Helvetica font has been used and spotted in places such as the Nasa space shuttle orbiter, used in the NFB logo (National Film Board of Canada) and finally even in europe, for health warnings on tobacco products such as cigarettes.
